Western Railway has taken a significant step towards modernising passenger amenities by inaugurating its first digital lounge at Mumbai Central railway station. The new facility aims to provide a comfortable, technology-enabled waiting space for passengers, particularly those travelling on long-distance trains or facing extended waiting hours at the station.

According to railway officials, the digital lounge has been developed as part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to upgrade station infrastructure and improve the overall travel experience. Mumbai Central, being one of the busiest railway stations in the country and a major hub on the Western Railway network, was chosen for the launch of this new initiative.

The digital lounge features well-designed seating arrangements, air-conditioned interiors, mobile and laptop charging points, and digital information screens displaying real-time train updates. These facilities are intended to reduce passenger inconvenience and provide a calm environment away from crowded waiting halls. Officials said the lounge is particularly useful for senior citizens, families, business travellers, and passengers with long layovers between connecting trains.

Railway authorities highlighted that the concept of a digital lounge aligns with the government’s focus on digitalisation and smart infrastructure under Indian Railways’ redevelopment programmes. In addition to comfort, the lounge also aims to improve access to timely information through digital displays, helping passengers stay updated on train schedules and platform changes.

Mumbai Central station handles thousands of passengers daily, including travellers on premium, express, and long-distance trains. With increasing passenger footfall, the need for enhanced waiting facilities has been growing steadily. The introduction of the digital lounge is expected to ease congestion in general waiting areas while offering an upgraded option for passengers seeking better amenities.

Western Railway officials also indicated that the performance and passenger response to the digital lounge at Mumbai Central will be reviewed before expanding the concept to other major stations across the zone. If successful, similar lounges may be introduced at key stations such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Bandra Terminus in a phased manner.

Indian Railways has been focusing on station redevelopment, cleanliness, improved passenger services, and technology-driven solutions over the past few years. Projects such as modern waiting halls, executive lounges, free Wi-Fi, digital ticketing systems, and improved signage are part of this broader transformation.

The launch of the digital lounge at Mumbai Central reflects Western Railway’s commitment to providing world-class facilities and enhancing passenger satisfaction. Officials reiterated that feedback from passengers would play a crucial role in further improving the service and shaping future infrastructure upgrades across the railway network.
