The Pune-Mumbai Expressway has been heavily congested since Wednesday morning, as holidaymakers took to the roads for their Christmas and New Year celebrations. Commuters were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours, with some reporting a staggering 12-kilometer-long queue of vehicles, causing significant delays.
The holiday season saw a surge in traffic volume, as both residents and tourists traveled between Pune and Mumbai for the festive season. Thousands of vehicles lined up along the busy stretch of the expressway, which connects the two major cities, leaving motorists frustrated and anxious. The long wait time and heavy congestion prompted several drivers to seek alternate routes, while others simply had to endure the gridlock for hours.
The traffic jam was further exacerbated by the high volume of vehicles trying to reach popular holiday destinations, as well as ongoing construction work on certain parts of the expressway. The situation worsened during peak hours, with no clear solution to alleviate the bottleneck.
Officials from the traffic department worked hard to manage the situation, providing regular updates and advising commuters to plan their travel accordingly. The authorities have also urged drivers to avoid unnecessary halts and keep a safe distance between vehicles to ensure smoother movement in the future.
While the traffic situation remained challenging, it highlighted the growing need for better infrastructure planning to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles on major highways during peak travel seasons. As the festive period continues, it is expected that the congestion will persist, with similar scenes of heavy traffic likely to unfold in the coming days.
