Tension prevailed in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after a mob attempted to storm the residence of H Thanglet, officials said. The incident took place on Sunday and led to intervention by security forces, who used tear gas and blank fire to disperse the crowd and restore order.

According to officials, the unrest began in the afternoon when a group of youths gathered outside the chairman’s residence, alleging the presence of militants inside the premises. The protesters expressed their concerns by pelting stones at the house and attempting to force their way in. Security personnel stationed in the area acted quickly to prevent any breach and used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Despite the initial dispersal, tensions escalated again later in the evening. A larger group of youths reportedly regrouped and made another attempt to enter the residence. In response to the renewed attempt, armed personnel fired blank rounds into the air as a warning measure to push back the crowd. The action helped prevent the situation from turning more serious, and the mob eventually dispersed.

Officials stated that the use of force was measured and intended solely to control the situation and ensure the safety of individuals in and around the residence. No major injuries were reported during the incident, although the situation remained tense for several hours.

In a related development, some agitators were reported to have set fire to tyres in the Tuibong area near Churachandpur town. This act was seen as part of the ongoing protest activity in the region. Security forces responded by deploying additional personnel and using tear gas to disperse the gathering, preventing further escalation.

Authorities have since increased security presence in and around sensitive areas of the district. Patrols have been intensified to maintain law and order and to prevent any further incidents. Officials have urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could lead to panic or unrest.
