President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial in Imphal, Manipur, commemorating the historic women-led movements that played a significant role in the region’s resistance against colonial rule. The visit formed part of her official engagement in the state and underscored the importance of recognizing the contributions of women in India’s freedom struggle.
The Nupi Lal, meaning Women’s War, refers to two major uprisings that took place in Manipur in 1904 and 1939. These movements were led primarily by Manipuri women who protested against British policies that affected local livelihoods, including forced labor practices and economic exploitation. The uprisings are widely regarded as landmark events in the history of women’s participation in mass movements in India.
During the tribute ceremony, President Murmu laid a wreath at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in honor of the women who participated in the movements. She was accompanied by senior state officials, including the Governor and representatives of the Manipur government. Security arrangements were in place, and the event proceeded according to protocol.
Officials present at the ceremony highlighted the historical significance of the Nupi Lal movements and their lasting impact on social and political awareness in the region. The memorial serves as a reminder of the collective strength and determination shown by women during a period of colonial oppression. It also stands as an important cultural and historical site in Imphal.
President Murmu has consistently emphasized the role of women in nation-building and social progress during her public engagements. Her visit to the Nupi Lal Memorial was seen as a reaffirmation of these values and a recognition of the contributions made by women from the northeastern region of the country.
The visit also drew attention to Manipur’s rich cultural heritage and its role in India’s broader historical narrative. Local leaders and historians noted that the Nupi Lal movements continue to inspire contemporary discussions on women’s empowerment and civic participation.
The Nupi Lal Memorial is maintained as a site of remembrance and education, attracting visitors, students, and researchers interested in the history of the region. The President’s tribute is expected to encourage greater awareness of the sacrifices made by Manipuri women and promote further efforts to preserve and share this important chapter of India’s freedom struggle.
