The Punjab government has come under fire from the High Court for failing to release funds under the Ayushman Bharat scheme to private hospitals, which provide critical healthcare services to scheme beneficiaries. The court expressed serious concerns over the state's inability to disburse funds, causing significant distress to hospitals and patients alike.
During a recent hearing, the High Court took strong exception to the prolonged delays in payment, which have strained private hospitals financially. Many hospitals participating in the Ayushman Bharat scheme, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), depend on these funds to continue offering treatments to economically weaker sections of society. Without timely payments, hospitals have struggled to maintain services and infrastructure.
The court directed the state government to provide a clear timeline for the release of pending payments and emphasized the importance of ensuring that hospitals are compensated without further delays. The delay has not only impacted hospital operations but has also threatened to disrupt the healthcare services provided to Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme is a flagship health initiative aimed at providing financial protection for poor and vulnerable families, covering secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. The private hospitals, which form a crucial part of this scheme, offer a range of medical treatments under its coverage. However, the current situation in Punjab has raised concerns about the effective implementation of the scheme in the state.
Healthcare experts have also voiced their concerns, stating that delays in payments could lead to hospitals withdrawing from the scheme, thereby reducing access to quality healthcare for those most in need. The High Court’s intervention has put pressure on the state government to take immediate action and rectify the issue.
With the court now actively monitoring the situation, the focus shifts to the state government to ensure that private hospitals receive their due payments, enabling them to continue offering essential healthcare services under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
