Dutch hockey legend Floris Jan Bovelander has praised India's historic contribution to international hockey, describing the country as a powerhouse of world hockey. He also highlighted Punjab's important role in the development of the sport, saying that Indian hockey could not be imagined without the state.

Bovelander made these remarks during his visit to Jalandhar, Punjab, to watch the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2026. The former Netherlands international was invited by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to attend the tournament, which is being held at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium.

Bovelander praises India's contribution to hockey

Speaking on the sidelines of the tournament, Bovelander recalled his association with Indian hockey and praised the country's contribution to taking the sport to greater heights internationally.

He also highlighted the role played by Asian countries, particularly India and Pakistan, in popularising hockey and strengthening its presence in the international sporting community.

According to reports, Bovelander said that many of his memories of Indian hockey were connected with players from Punjab, particularly Sikh players. He emphasised that the state's contribution has been an important part of India's hockey history.

His comments reflect the longstanding connection between Punjab and Indian hockey, with the state producing several players who have represented the country at major international competitions.

Thanks Bhagwant Mann for the invitation

The Dutch hockey great also expressed his appreciation for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's personal invitation.

Bovelander recalled Mann's visit to the Netherlands in April 2026 and said he was surprised and honoured that the Chief Minister remembered him and invited him to attend the prestigious tournament in Punjab.

He described the invitation as a reflection of Mann's enthusiasm and passion for hockey. Bovelander said this was an important reason for making the journey to Jalandhar.

The interaction also follows Mann's earlier efforts to strengthen sporting connections between Punjab and the Netherlands during his overseas visit.

An accomplished international hockey career

He represented the Netherlands in 241 international matches between October 1985 and August 1996, scoring 215 goals during his career.

His major achievements include winning the 1990 Hockey World Cup and the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. His scoring ability and expertise in penalty-corner situations made him a prominent figure in Dutch hockey.

He is also popularly known by nicknames including Flop, Floppie and Boem Boem Bovelander.

Shares experience with Punjab's young hockey players

During his visit, Bovelander participated in a joint training programme involving 37 hockey coaches from Punjab and young trainees at the Surjit Hockey Academy.

The academy operates under the aegis of the Punjab Government. The session provided an opportunity for young players and coaches to learn from the experience of an international hockey champion.

Bovelander interacted with the trainees and participated in a special drag-flick training session. He demonstrated techniques and shared practical advice based on his international playing experience.

He was accompanied by Olympian and hockey medallist Gurjant Singh, Dronacharya Award recipient Jiwanjot Singh Teja and hockey coach Avtar Singh.

The interaction focused on sharing technical knowledge and encouraging the next generation of players to improve their skills.
