Lucknow – A lineman employed with the Uttar Pradesh Power Department has been dismissed from service after a video allegedly showing him waving a Palestine flag surfaced online. The incident, which took place in the state’s western region, quickly drew administrative attention and public reactions, prompting the department to take swift disciplinary action.
According to officials, the action was taken on grounds of violating service conduct rules. "Government employees are expected to maintain neutrality and refrain from actions that may be seen as politically or internationally provocative," a department spokesperson said. The authorities stated that the flag-waving incident had the potential to create communal disharmony and was in violation of the employee code of conduct.
The lineman, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, reportedly claimed in his defense that he did not intend to make a political statement. He maintained that the flag was misunderstood and denied any association with foreign political or religious agendas. Supporters of the lineman have argued that the disciplinary action was harsh and premature, given that a formal investigation had not been completed at the time of dismissal.
The department, however, has stated that an internal inquiry has been initiated to further investigate the intent and context behind the act. The inquiry committee is expected to review available footage, statements, and any evidence submitted by the employee in his defense.
The issue has stirred debate on social media, with opinions sharply divided. While some argue that the act was inappropriate for a government employee, others have called for caution in drawing conclusions without a fair probe. Civil rights advocates have urged the government to ensure due process and avoid reactionary measures that may infringe on individual rights.
This incident comes amid heightened global attention to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has seen expressions of solidarity and protest across parts of India. However, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have reiterated the need for public employees to avoid actions that could be perceived as politically sensitive or disruptive.
