Legal experts explain that once an FIR is registered under POCSO provisions, investigators are required to proceed with urgency while ensuring protection of the complainant’s identity and rights.

A Special Court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in Prayagraj has directed police to register a First Information Report against Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the head of Jyotish Peeth, over allegations of sexual exploitation. The directive has prompted an official investigation, drawing significant public and institutional attention.

Acting on the court’s order, a six member team from Jhunsi Police Station arrived at Shri Vidyamath in the Kedarghat area to carry out preliminary questioning and related procedures. The team was led by Station In Charge Mahesh Mishra. Police officials confirmed that their actions were in compliance with the court’s instructions and that due process would be followed throughout the investigation.

The case falls under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, commonly referred to as POCSO, which mandates strict legal procedures in cases involving allegations of offences against minors. The Special Court’s direction to register an FIR indicates that the complaint met the threshold for initiating formal investigation.

Authorities have not disclosed detailed information regarding the nature of the allegations, citing the sensitive nature of the case and legal confidentiality requirements. Police officials stated that statements would be recorded, evidence collected, and all aspects of the complaint examined thoroughly.

The development has generated reactions within religious and legal communities, given the prominence of the Jyotish Peeth institution and its head. Jyotish Peeth is one of the four traditional monastic centres associated with the Advaita Vedanta tradition. Observers note that cases involving prominent religious figures often attract heightened public attention, underscoring the need for transparency and adherence to legal norms.

Police authorities have appealed to the public and media to refrain from speculation and to respect the judicial process. They emphasised that the investigation remains at an initial stage and that conclusions will be drawn only after examination of evidence.

Further updates are expected as the inquiry advances and official statements are released by law enforcement agencies or the court.
