It further emphasized that this alleged harassment was a violation of voter rights and demanded immediate action from the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polling.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has raised serious allegations of voter intimidation ahead of the crucial bypolls in Uttar Pradesh. In a formal complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, the SP accused officials of targeting Muslim voters by asking them to remove their veils at polling stations, creating an atmosphere of fear and discouraging them from voting.

The letter from the SP stated that such acts were a deliberate attempt to suppress minority votes, which could tilt the electoral outcome. It further emphasized that this alleged harassment was a violation of voter rights and demanded immediate action from the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polling.

Responding to these allegations, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly refuted the claims, terming them as politically motivated. BJP leaders argued that the SP was trying to create unnecessary controversy to divert attention from its lack of preparation for the elections. They defended the checks at polling stations, stating that these were routine measures to prevent electoral malpractices, including bogus voting.

The issue has sparked a war of words between the two parties, with the SP accusing the BJP-led administration of using state machinery to intimidate specific communities. Meanwhile, the BJP has countered by accusing the SP of playing identity politics to gain sympathy votes.

With the bypolls being a litmus test for both parties, these allegations have added a contentious dimension to the electoral process. The Election Commission is yet to respond to the SP's letter, but political observers believe this controversy could influence voter sentiment in the days to come.

This development highlights the intense political rivalry in Uttar Pradesh and the significance of bypolls as a reflection of broader political trends in the state.
