After enduring days of scorching heat and high humidity, residents of Varanasi experienced a welcome change in weather on Monday as moderate rainfall lashed several parts of the city. The rainfall, which began in the afternoon and continued intermittently into the evening, helped bring down the temperature and offered much-needed relief from the intense summer heat.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the showers mark the beginning of monsoon activity in the region. The temperature, which had hovered above 42 degrees Celsius for several days, dropped significantly following the rainfall. The maximum temperature recorded in Varanasi on Monday was around 35 degrees Celsius, offering a notable decline from previous highs.
Several key areas in the city including Godowlia, Lanka, Sigra, and Bhelupur reported moderate to heavy showers. While the rain caused some waterlogging in low-lying areas and minor traffic disruptions, the overall mood in the city was one of relief. Street vendors, local shopkeepers, and residents welcomed the change, calling it a much-needed break from the harsh weather.
The IMD has forecast more rainfall in eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next few days. Light to moderate showers, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds, are expected as part of the monsoon's advancement. Meteorologists have confirmed that monsoon winds have reached parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, and the rain in Varanasi is part of this pattern.
Farmers in the surrounding rural areas have also welcomed the rainfall, as it is seen as beneficial for preparing the land for the upcoming Kharif season. Early monsoon showers help in loosening the soil, making it suitable for sowing crops such as paddy, maize, and pulses.
Local authorities have been directed to remain alert in case of excessive rainfall or waterlogging in urban areas. The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has activated emergency response teams to monitor drainage systems and clear any blockages that may lead to flooding. No major incidents or damage have been reported so far due to the rain.
The arrival of rain has also brought temporary relief from health issues related to heat, such as dehydration, heatstroke, and skin rashes. Hospitals in the city had reported a rise in heat-related illnesses over the past two weeks. With the weather cooling down, medical professionals expect a decrease in such cases.
In the coming days, residents are advised to stay updated with weather reports and take precautions during heavy rainfall periods, especially when venturing outside or driving. Authorities have requested citizens to avoid dumping waste into open drains to prevent blockages during the monsoon season.
Overall, the rainfall has been received positively by most sections of society in Varanasi. As the monsoon sets in, it is expected to bring further relief from the summer heat and support agricultural and water needs across the region.
