The Central Government has launched the National Drug Registry under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission in an effort to create a unified digital database of medicines across the country's healthcare system. The initiative was launched by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and is intended to establish a standard digital identity for medicines used in India.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Drug Registry has been developed to address long standing challenges related to the identification and management of medicines. At present, the same medicine may be recorded under different names, spellings or formats in various hospitals, pharmacies and healthcare software systems. This often results in inconsistencies, duplicate records and data entry errors.
The National Drug Registry aims to standardise medicine information by assigning each approved medicine a unique and verified digital identity. With a common reference system, hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, diagnostic centres and digital health platforms will be able to access the same standardised medicine information.
The government stated that this initiative will improve interoperability across healthcare institutions. Interoperability refers to the ability of different digital health systems to exchange and interpret information accurately. By ensuring that medicine records follow a common standard, the registry is expected to improve coordination between healthcare providers and reduce administrative challenges.
The Drug Registry forms part of the broader Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which seeks to strengthen India's digital healthcare infrastructure. The mission focuses on creating an integrated digital health ecosystem that enables secure sharing of health records, better patient care and improved healthcare delivery through technology.
Officials said the registry will also support electronic health records, e prescriptions and other digital healthcare services by ensuring that medicine information remains consistent across different platforms. This is expected to reduce prescribing errors, minimise duplication of medicine records and improve the quality of healthcare data.
The introduction of a national medicine database is also expected to benefit healthcare professionals by providing quick access to verified medicine information. Doctors and pharmacists will be able to refer to a standardised database, helping improve prescription accuracy and patient safety.
The government believes that the registry will play an important role in strengthening digital health services as more hospitals and healthcare providers adopt electronic systems. By maintaining uniform medicine information, healthcare institutions can improve efficiency while supporting better clinical decision making.
The National Drug Registry is one of several initiatives being implemented under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to modernise India's healthcare ecosystem through digital technology.
