The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission has entered into agreements with the pharmacy councils of Bihar, Maharashtra, and Mizoram to strengthen medicine safety systems and improve monitoring of adverse drug reactions across the country. The initiative is aimed at expanding pharmacovigilance activities and promoting the safe and rational use of medicines among healthcare professionals and the public.

The Memoranda of Understanding were signed at the IPC headquarters in Ghaziabad in the presence of senior healthcare officials and representatives from the participating state pharmacy councils. The agreements are expected to enhance collaboration between the central health authorities and state level pharmacy organisations.

Pharmacovigilance refers to the process of monitoring, assessing, and preventing adverse effects or other medicine related problems. Healthcare experts consider adverse drug reaction reporting systems important for identifying potential safety issues related to medicines after they become available for public use.

According to officials, the agreements will focus on strengthening adverse drug reaction reporting mechanisms, expanding the number of ADR Monitoring Centres, and increasing awareness regarding medicine safety among pharmacists, doctors, healthcare workers, and patients.

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and plays a major role in maintaining standards for medicines in India. It also coordinates activities related to the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India, which monitors medicine safety and collects reports related to adverse drug reactions from healthcare institutions across the country.

Authorities stated that one of the main goals of the partnership is to encourage more healthcare professionals to report adverse reactions linked to medicines. Improved reporting systems can help regulators identify safety concerns earlier and take necessary action to protect patients.

The initiative also aims to promote the rational use of medicines, which refers to using the right medicine in the correct dosage for the appropriate duration based on scientific evidence and patient requirements. Experts say irrational or inappropriate use of medicines can lead to health risks, reduced treatment effectiveness, and drug resistance.

Healthcare specialists note that pharmacists play an important role in medicine safety because they are directly involved in dispensing medicines and advising patients regarding proper usage. Training and awareness programs are expected to be organised under the new agreements to improve knowledge about adverse reaction reporting and safe medication practices.

Officials believe the expansion of ADR Monitoring Centres will strengthen India’s healthcare safety infrastructure by allowing better collection and analysis of medicine related safety data. Monitoring centres are important for identifying rare side effects and ensuring continued safety evaluation of medicines already available in the market.

Public health experts also state that pharmacovigilance systems became increasingly important in recent years due to the rapid development of medicines and vaccines. Effective monitoring systems help ensure that medicines remain safe and beneficial for patients even after approval and widespread use.

The collaboration between the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission and the pharmacy councils of Bihar, Maharashtra, and Mizoram is expected to support long term improvements in medicine safety awareness and healthcare quality in the participating states.

Authorities have emphasised that patient safety remains a major priority in healthcare administration. Strengthening adverse drug reaction reporting systems can help improve transparency, healthcare outcomes, and trust in medical treatment systems.

Overall, the agreements signed by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission represent an important step toward improving pharmacovigilance, medicine safety, and responsible healthcare practices in India. The initiative is expected to contribute to better patient care and stronger monitoring of medicine related risks across the country.
