The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has strengthened its efforts to improve food safety across the country by launching a nationwide consumer awareness campaign titled Be the Eyes of Food Safety. The initiative encourages citizens to actively report food safety violations, unhygienic kitchens and unsafe food handling practices through the Food Safety Connect platform.
The campaign aims to involve the public in identifying food safety issues at restaurants, street food vendors, hotels, cafes and other food establishments. According to the regulator, consumers play an important role in ensuring that food businesses comply with hygiene and safety standards.
Under the initiative, members of the public can file complaints using the Food Safety Connect platform by providing details of the violation and uploading supporting photographs. The platform is designed to make reporting easier and enable food safety authorities to respond more efficiently to complaints received from consumers.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India stated that public participation can significantly strengthen food safety enforcement by helping officials identify violations that may otherwise go unnoticed during routine inspections.
The campaign focuses on several common food safety concerns, including unclean kitchens, improper food storage, unsafe food handling practices, expired food products, poor sanitation and other conditions that may pose health risks to consumers.
After a complaint is submitted, the information is forwarded to the appropriate food safety authorities for verification and further action, wherever necessary. Officials may conduct inspections and initiate action under the Food Safety and Standards Act if violations are confirmed.
Food safety experts have welcomed the initiative, stating that consumer participation can complement regulatory inspections and improve overall compliance among food business operators. They note that increasing awareness among the public encourages responsible food practices while promoting accountability within the food industry.
The regulator has also urged consumers to remain responsible while filing complaints by providing accurate information and genuine evidence. False or misleading complaints can delay investigations and divert resources from genuine food safety concerns.
The campaign is part of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's broader objective of promoting safe, hygienic and nutritious food throughout the country. Along with regular inspections, licensing and awareness programmes, the authority continues to strengthen its digital services to improve communication between citizens and regulatory agencies.
Food business operators have also been advised to maintain proper hygiene, train food handlers, follow safe food preparation procedures and comply with all applicable food safety regulations. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness not only protects public health but also enhances consumer confidence.
The Food Safety Connect platform forms part of the authority's digital governance initiatives, enabling faster reporting, improved monitoring and better coordination between consumers and food safety departments across India.
The regulator has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the campaign and promptly report any food safety concerns they encounter. Officials believe that greater public involvement will contribute to safer food environments and stronger compliance with food safety standards nationwide.
