Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has said that no state government has complained about interference from the Ministry of Cooperation since the ministry was established. He described this as one of the ministry's most significant achievements, noting that concerns had initially been expressed regarding the constitutional role of the ministry and its relationship with state governments.
Speaking about the ministry's functioning, Shah recalled that when the Ministry of Cooperation was created, some critics questioned whether it might interfere in matters that fall under the jurisdiction of state governments. Since cooperation is listed as a state subject under the Constitution of India, there were concerns that the Union Government's involvement could affect the autonomy of states in managing cooperative institutions.
According to Amit Shah, those concerns have not materialized during the ministry's functioning. He stated that no state has officially complained that the Ministry of Cooperation has interfered in its responsibilities or administration. Instead, he said the ministry has worked in partnership with state governments while respecting the constitutional framework governing the cooperative sector.
The Ministry of Cooperation was established by the Government of India in July 2021 with the objective of strengthening the cooperative movement across the country. The ministry aims to improve the ease of doing business for cooperative societies, promote transparency, encourage digital transformation, and support the development of multi-state cooperative institutions.
Since its formation, the ministry has introduced several initiatives intended to modernize the cooperative sector. These include measures related to digitization, capacity building, governance reforms, and expanding access to financial and institutional support for cooperative societies.
