Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika has clarified that the recent incident involving the alleged collection of Rs 110 from households in villages located near the Uriamghat border should not be linked to either the Naga community or the Government of Nagaland. The minister made the statement while addressing the Assam Legislative Assembly, seeking to prevent misunderstandings and maintain harmony between the neighbouring states.
According to the minister, preliminary findings indicate that the money was allegedly collected by a small group of identified individuals acting independently. He stressed that the actions of these individuals should not be viewed as representing any community, organisation or the Nagaland government.
The clarification came after reports surfaced claiming that residents in some villages along the Assam Nagaland border had been asked to pay Rs 110 per household as a so called border tax. The reports generated concern among local residents and prompted discussions in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Responding to the issue, Pijush Hazarika said the state government had taken the matter seriously and initiated the necessary inquiries. He assured lawmakers that law enforcement agencies were examining the incident and that appropriate legal action would be taken against those found responsible.
The minister also appealed to the public not to spread rumours or draw conclusions before the investigation is completed. He emphasised that misinformation could create unnecessary tension in border areas where maintaining peace and cooperation remains important.
The Assam Nagaland border has witnessed disputes over territorial claims for several decades. Despite these differences, both state governments have repeatedly expressed their commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and legal processes while maintaining peace in border regions.
Hazarika reiterated that the alleged collection of money should not be interpreted as an action supported by the Government of Nagaland. He said there was no evidence suggesting official involvement and urged people to distinguish between the alleged actions of a few individuals and the policies of a state government.
The minister further stated that the Assam government remains committed to protecting the interests of residents living in border villages. He added that the administration would continue to monitor the situation closely and ensure that any unlawful activities are addressed in accordance with the law.
The clarification is expected to help prevent confusion and maintain cordial relations between Assam and Nagaland. Officials have also encouraged residents to report any similar incidents to the authorities so that prompt action can be taken.
