BJP Government Faces Early Electoral Test as Nandigram and Rejinagar Go to Bypolls

The two constituencies have attracted considerable political attention because the elections will provide an early indication of the political mood after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in West Bengal in the 2026 Assembly elections.

West Bengal is set for a closely watched political contest as voters in the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies prepare to cast their votes in the October 6, 2026 bypolls. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 9. The two constituencies have attracted considerable political attention because the elections will provide an early indication of the political mood after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in West Bengal in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The bypolls are particularly important for the BJP because the party is seeking to consolidate its position after ending the Trinamool Congress governments long period of rule in the state. The results in Nandigram and Rejinagar will not determine the governments immediate survival, but they are expected to offer a political indication of voter sentiment and the ability of the ruling party to retain support in different parts of West Bengal.

Nandigram has a special place in the states political history. The constituency became nationally prominent during the land acquisition protests that played an important role in the political rise of the Trinamool Congress. It also became the centre of a major political battle between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari during the 2021 Assembly election. Adhikari subsequently became a senior BJP leader and is now the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The current Nandigram bypoll became necessary after Suvendu Adhikari won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 Assembly elections and subsequently retained Bhabanipur, leaving the Nandigram seat vacant. The BJP has nominated Hasirani Rath as its candidate for the bypoll. Congress and other political parties are also contesting the seat.

The campaign in Nandigram has therefore carried considerable political and emotional significance. BJP leaders have sought to highlight the governments performance and development agenda, while opposition parties have attempted to challenge the ruling party and regain political ground. The final days of campaigning saw senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, actively campaigning for the party candidate.

Rejinagar presents a different political scenario. The constituency is located in Murshidabad district and has a substantial minority electorate. The contest is also more fragmented, with several political parties and candidates seeking to attract voters. The BJP has fielded Shakharav Sarkar, while Congress, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party and two Trinamool Congress factions are also involved in the electoral contest.

The Rejinagar contest has consequently become an important test of the BJP's ability to expand its support among voters beyond its traditional areas of strength. BJP leaders have focused on development, employment and government welfare programmes during the campaign. Opposition parties, meanwhile, have raised their own political issues and sought to challenge the BJP governments approach.

The political situation is further complicated by developments within the Trinamool Congress. Following the BJP's victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party has been facing an internal dispute involving rival factions. The Election Commission has been dealing with questions concerning the party's identity, name and election symbol. The dispute has added another layer of uncertainty to the bypoll contests.

The two bypolls are also significant for opposition parties. Congress is attempting to remain politically relevant, while the different Trinamool Congress factions are seeking to demonstrate their strength. The Left Front has also fielded candidates in the two constituencies. This has created a contest involving multiple political forces rather than a simple direct fight between the ruling BJP and a single opposition party.

In Nandigram, the historical importance of the constituency is likely to remain an important factor in the political narrative. The seat has been associated with some of the most significant political developments in West Bengal over the past two decades. A strong BJP performance could strengthen the ruling party's claim that it has consolidated its position in the state. A strong opposition performance, on the other hand, could provide encouragement to parties seeking to rebuild after the 2026 Assembly election defeat.

In Rejinagar, the outcome will be closely watched for a different reason. The constituency has a large minority population and a fragmented political contest. The result could provide an indication of whether the BJP can make further electoral gains in areas where it has traditionally faced stronger competition from opposition parties.

The October 6 polling will therefore be closely observed across West Bengal. Voter turnout, the performance of individual candidates and the distribution of votes among the different political parties will be important factors in determining the final outcome.

The results on October 9 will provide the first significant electoral feedback for the BJP government after the 2026 Assembly election victory. For the opposition parties, the bypolls represent an opportunity to demonstrate that they can recover political support and challenge the ruling party.

Although the results of two Assembly seats cannot by themselves determine the long term political direction of West Bengal, the outcome is expected to influence the political narrative in the state. Both the ruling BJP and opposition parties are therefore treating the Nandigram and Rejinagar contests as important political tests.
