In a sharp political exchange during a Parliamentary session, BJP Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey made serious allegations against the Congress party and its leadership. He claimed that former UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had significant influence over the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and effectively controlled decision-making processes during Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Dubey’s remarks came during a heated debate in the Lok Sabha, where he stated that despite Dr. Singh holding the constitutional position of Prime Minister, the actual authority rested with Sonia Gandhi, who led the Congress party and the UPA coalition. He accused the Congress of undermining democratic institutions and following what he termed a “dual power centre” model.
According to Dubey, several key policy decisions were taken not by the Cabinet but by the National Advisory Council (NAC), which was headed by Sonia Gandhi during the UPA era. He argued that this body, which had no constitutional authority, played an outsized role in shaping government policy, sidelining elected ministers and the formal structure of governance.
The BJP MP further alleged that this structure was not only undemocratic but also harmful to institutional integrity. He drew comparisons between the current administration and the UPA era, claiming that the Modi-led government functions with transparency and clear accountability, unlike the previous regime.
Congress MPs strongly objected to the allegations. Several members rose in protest, calling the remarks baseless and insulting to a former Prime Minister who is widely respected for his personal integrity and administrative experience. They accused the BJP of attempting to rewrite history and distract the public from pressing national issues such as inflation, unemployment, and the state of the economy.
Congress spokespersons later responded outside Parliament, calling Dubey’s remarks politically motivated. They said the BJP is resorting to personal attacks because it is unable to address real issues concerning the people. The party also reiterated its stand that the UPA government functioned as a coalition with collective responsibility and that all decisions were made through due process.
The episode added to the growing tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party in the ongoing session of Parliament. The debate over historical governance styles, leadership roles, and institutional authority has become a frequent theme in recent political discourse.
As the 2024 general election results continue to influence parliamentary debates and alliances, such statements are seen as part of a broader strategy by both parties to shape public opinion and reinforce political narratives.
Political analysts suggest that while such debates are not new, the focus should ideally remain on constructive discussions and legislative priorities rather than personal attacks or retrospective blame games.
