The Bharatiya Janata Party has served a Rs 100 crore defamation notice to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following his public remarks alleging that the party attempted to influence National Conference legislators through cash offers.
According to the legal notice, the BJP has strongly denied the allegations and described them as false, baseless and defamatory. The party has stated that Omar Abdullah's comments have damaged its public image and reputation, prompting it to seek legal action unless the statements are withdrawn.
The controversy began after Omar Abdullah reportedly claimed that attempts were made to lure National Conference MLAs with financial inducements. His remarks attracted significant political attention and triggered a strong response from the BJP.
In the notice, the BJP has demanded that Omar Abdullah issue a written retraction of the statements and publish an unconditional public apology within seven days of receiving the notice. The party has also asked him to refrain from making similar allegations in the future without evidence.
The legal notice states that if the demands are not met within the stipulated period, the BJP will initiate both civil and criminal defamation proceedings in accordance with Indian law. The party has maintained that its reputation has been harmed by the allegations and that legal remedies are necessary to protect its public standing.
The exchange marks the latest political confrontation between the BJP and the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir. Political disagreements between the two parties have frequently led to sharp public statements, particularly on issues related to governance, elections and legislative politics.
As of now, Omar Abdullah has not issued an official response to the legal notice. It also remains unclear whether he intends to withdraw his remarks or contest the matter through legal proceedings.
Legal experts note that defamation notices are often the first step before initiating court proceedings. Depending on the response from the recipient, the matter may either be resolved through a clarification or apology, or proceed before the appropriate judicial forum.
The development has attracted attention across political circles, with leaders from different parties closely watching the outcome. The case is expected to remain in focus in the coming days, particularly if either side makes further public statements or initiates legal action.
At present, the matter remains at the legal notice stage, and no court has made any findings regarding the allegations or the claims made by either party.
