The Indian National Congress has strongly criticised the Central government over the recent increase in fuel prices, accusing the administration of placing an additional burden on citizens soon after the conclusion of Assembly elections in several states.
According to Congress leaders, petrol and diesel prices have been increased by Rs 3 per litre, while compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have reportedly gone up by Rs 2 per litre. The opposition party alleged that the government delayed the price revision until the elections were completed and then implemented the hike immediately afterward.
Several Congress leaders targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue and claimed the rising fuel prices would directly impact ordinary citizens, transport operators, and small businesses. The party argued that increasing fuel prices at a time when inflation continues to affect household expenses would create further economic pressure on middle-class and lower-income families.

The ruling government, however, has previously pointed to fluctuations in global crude oil prices and international market conditions as major reasons for fuel price revisions. Energy experts have also noted that geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in global crude oil markets often affect domestic fuel pricing in India.

Opposition parties frequently raise concerns about petrol, diesel, and cooking gas prices, especially during periods of inflation. At the same time, the government has highlighted measures such as tax reductions and subsidies introduced at different times to reduce the burden on consumers.
