Congress Open to Rescheduling INDIA Bloc Rally After Delhi Traders’ Appeal
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has indicated that the INDIA bloc is willing to consider a request from Delhi’s traders to reschedule its November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan. The appeal comes amid concerns that the political gathering could disrupt commercial activity during the busy festive shopping season.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry has urged Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to postpone the rally until after November 10. The traders’ body has warned that traffic restrictions, security arrangements and large crowds could affect businesses operating in and around central Delhi.
Kharge Says Leadership Will Consider Request
Speaking to reporters in Patna, Kharge acknowledged that the Congress leadership had received the traders’ appeal. He said the party would discuss the request and work towards a solution.
Kharge indicated that the proposed rally date could be reconsidered, although no formal postponement had been announced at the time of his remarks.
The Congress president also defended the INDIA bloc’s planned campaign, which concerns alleged irregularities in the electoral process and issues related to voting rights. He maintained that the opposition’s campaign was intended to address matters of public importance.
His response suggests that the leadership is considering the traders’ concerns while continuing to emphasise the political objectives of the planned demonstration.
Why Delhi Traders Want the Rally Postponed
The Chamber of Trade and Industry has asked the opposition alliance to hold the rally after November 10, when the major festive shopping period will have passed. The association has cited Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj as important occasions for businesses across the capital.
According to the traders’ body, Delhi’s markets experience significant commercial activity during this period, particularly in jewellery, clothing, electronics, household goods, automobiles and other consumer products.
The association has warned that road closures, traffic diversions and security barricades around Ramlila Maidan could make it difficult for customers and traders to access nearby commercial areas.
The traders’ body has estimated that the proposed rally could put approximately Rs 10,000 crore in business at risk during the festive period. This figure represents the association’s estimate and should not be treated as an independently verified loss.
Concerns Over Markets and Traffic
Ramlila Maidan is located near several major wholesale and retail markets in Delhi. These include Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Bhagirath Palace and Karol Bagh.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry has expressed concern that traffic restrictions and crowd management arrangements could affect the movement of customers, suppliers and commercial vehicles. Such disruptions, it argues, could have an impact on businesses that depend on high customer footfall during the festive season.
The traders’ body has also highlighted the proximity of Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations to the affected areas. Buyers and traders travelling to the capital from other parts of the country could face additional difficulties if traffic congestion increases around the rally venue.
The association has further claimed that earlier demonstrations and road closures in central Delhi caused substantial business losses during October. These figures are based on the organisation’s assessment.
Congress Maintains Its Position on the Campaign
While considering the traders’ appeal, Kharge reiterated the importance of the INDIA bloc’s campaign concerning alleged vote-related irregularities. He argued that protecting democratic rights was a matter of public interest.
The planned rally is part of the opposition alliance’s campaign over concerns relating to the electoral process, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. These concerns and allegations are political claims and should be distinguished from any findings established by the relevant authorities.
The traders’ association, meanwhile, has acknowledged the right of political parties to organise public demonstrations. Its request focuses on the timing of the rally and the possible consequences for businesses during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
Final Decision on Rally Date Awaited
The Congress leadership is expected to consider the request before deciding whether the November 1 rally will proceed as scheduled or be moved to a later date. Kharge’s remarks indicate a willingness to discuss the matter, but they do not confirm that the event has been postponed.
The issue highlights the challenge of balancing political demonstrations with the commercial needs of businesses and the movement of the public in busy urban areas.
For Delhi’s traders, the priority is to protect access to markets during the festive shopping season. For the INDIA bloc, the rally remains part of its broader political campaign.
The next official announcement from the opposition alliance will clarify whether the proposed event will take place on November 1 or be rescheduled. Until then, the original date remains the planned date, subject to any subsequent decision by the organisers.
