The Communist Party of India Marxist has criticised the United Democratic Front government over its handling of the Wayanad landslide tragedy, alleging that the administration failed to respond effectively and that the disaster has been unnecessarily politicised. The party stated that inconsistent communication from government representatives and administrative officials created confusion among the public and weakened confidence in the authorities during a critical period.
According to the CPI(M), the government's response to the landslide exposed several administrative shortcomings. The party claimed that contradictory statements issued by ministers and officials led to uncertainty regarding the measures taken before and after the disaster. It argued that clear and coordinated communication is essential during natural disasters to ensure that affected communities receive accurate information and timely assistance.
The party also alleged that delays in implementing precautionary measures may have contributed to the severity of the situation. It stressed that disaster preparedness, early warning systems and timely evacuation play an important role in reducing the impact of natural calamities. Strengthening these mechanisms, the party said, should be a priority for the government to minimise risks in vulnerable regions.
In addition to its criticism of the government's response, the CPI(M) raised concerns about the role of sections of the media. The party alleged that certain media narratives focused more on defending the government's actions rather than examining the administrative issues surrounding the disaster. It emphasised the importance of independent reporting and factual coverage during emergencies so that the public receives balanced and verified information.
The Wayanad landslide has once again highlighted the challenges faced by hilly regions during periods of intense rainfall. Experts have repeatedly stressed the need for improved disaster management, environmental protection and scientific monitoring in landslide-prone areas. Effective coordination between government departments, local authorities and disaster response agencies is considered essential to reducing the impact of such events.
The CPI(M) also urged the government to ensure transparency in the implementation of rehabilitation, reconstruction and infrastructure projects related to disaster management. According to the party, public confidence can be strengthened only through accountability, efficient administration and timely execution of relief measures.
The party further called for a comprehensive review of existing disaster preparedness policies to identify gaps and improve emergency response mechanisms. It stated that lessons learned from the Wayanad tragedy should be used to strengthen future disaster management strategies and safeguard vulnerable communities.
The government has not accepted the allegations made by the CPI(M). As discussions continue over the response to the landslide, attention remains focused on rehabilitation efforts, assistance to affected families and measures aimed at improving disaster preparedness across the state.
