The Election Commission of India has introduced a new requirement for individuals applying for inclusion in the electoral roll. Under the revised procedure, new voter applicants must provide their parents' Special Intensive Revision (SIR) details while submitting Form 6, the prescribed application form for voter registration.
According to the Election Commission, the decision is aimed at strengthening the accuracy of electoral rolls, improving voter data mapping and streamlining the verification process carried out by election officials.
Form 6 is the official application used by eligible Indian citizens to register themselves as voters. It is submitted by individuals who have attained the qualifying age and wish to have their names included in the electoral roll of their constituency.
Under the revised guidelines, applicants will now be required to furnish the SIR details of their parents wherever applicable. The Election Commission has stated that this additional information will assist electoral registration officers in verifying applications more efficiently and in linking family records during the preparation and revision of electoral rolls.
The Commission explained that improved mapping of voter records can help reduce duplication, ensure greater accuracy and facilitate the maintenance of updated electoral databases. Officials believe that the revised requirement will contribute to a more transparent and reliable voter registration system.
The new rule forms part of the Election Commission's continuing efforts to modernize election management through better use of digital records and structured verification procedures. Over the years, the Commission has introduced several technological initiatives to improve voter services, online registration and electoral roll management.
Election officials have clarified that the information provided by applicants will be verified according to existing legal procedures. Applicants are advised to ensure that all information entered in Form 6 is accurate and supported by valid documents wherever required.
The Commission has also reiterated that voter registration remains subject to the eligibility conditions prescribed under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electors Rules. Applicants must satisfy all legal requirements relating to age, citizenship and ordinary residence before their names can be included in the electoral roll.
Election experts believe that strengthening the verification process can improve the quality of electoral rolls and help election authorities identify inconsistencies during periodic revisions. At the same time, they note that implementation of the new requirement will depend on clear operational guidelines and effective coordination among electoral registration officers.
