AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has raised concerns over the use of E20 ethanol blended petrol in vehicles manufactured before 2023, alleging that the Central Government is pressuring automobile manufacturers not to publicly discuss the issue. The allegations were made during a press conference and have been rejected by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to Kejriwal, he has written to 29 automobile manufacturers producing two wheelers and four wheelers, seeking clarification on whether vehicles manufactured before 2023 can safely operate using E20 petrol. He also asked the companies whether they would compensate vehicle owners if the use of E20 fuel resulted in engine damage, reduced performance or lower fuel efficiency.
Kejriwal said consumers deserve clear and transparent information regarding the compatibility of their vehicles with ethanol blended fuel. He urged automobile manufacturers to provide official responses so that vehicle owners can make informed decisions about fuel usage.
The BJP strongly rejected the allegations. Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra challenged Kejriwal to present evidence supporting his claims. He also questioned whether there were verified cases of vehicles being damaged solely due to the use of E20 petrol and maintained that the allegations lacked factual support.
The issue has drawn attention because the Government of India has been promoting ethanol blended fuel as part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, improve energy security and support domestic biofuel production. The introduction of E20 petrol, which contains up to 20 percent ethanol blended with petrol, is a key component of this policy.
Automobile manufacturers have previously issued vehicle specific guidance regarding fuel compatibility. Several companies have stated that many newer vehicle models are designed to operate with E20 fuel, while owners of older vehicles are generally advised to consult their vehicle manuals or contact authorized service centers to confirm compatibility.
Industry experts note that fuel compatibility depends on the vehicle model, engine design and manufacturer specifications. They recommend that consumers follow official guidance issued by their respective vehicle manufacturers rather than relying on unverified information.
At present, no official statement has been released by the Central Government or the automobile manufacturers in response to Kejriwal's latest allegations. Any clarification from the manufacturers or government authorities is expected to provide greater certainty for consumers regarding the use of E20 petrol in older vehicles.
The debate has highlighted the importance of consumer awareness as India continues expanding the use of ethanol blended fuels. Experts believe that clear communication from manufacturers and policymakers will help ensure a smooth transition while maintaining consumer confidence in the country's evolving fuel policy.
