Kolkata Police have registered a criminal case against Trinamool Congress councillor Sushanta Ghosh and four other individuals in connection with an alleged forgery and cheating case involving the sale of a footpath stall in the city.
According to police sources, the complaint was filed by a local resident who alleged that he paid Rs 3.5 lakh for a footpath stall after being assured that all necessary permissions and documentation were in place. However, after the transaction was completed, the complainant reportedly discovered discrepancies in the documents provided to him.
The complaint alleges that a forged licence was used as part of the deal and that the stall handed over to the buyer was significantly smaller than the size that had been promised at the time of the agreement. Based on these allegations, police registered a case under relevant sections related to forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
Investigators have begun examining documents connected to the transaction and are collecting statements from the complainant and other individuals linked to the case. Authorities are also verifying the authenticity of the licence and related records submitted during the stall transfer process.
The case has attracted attention because one of the accused is an elected representative of the Trinamool Congress. Political observers note that allegations involving public representatives often draw heightened public scrutiny, particularly when they relate to property transactions and financial dealings.
Police officials have stated that the investigation is at a preliminary stage and that all allegations will be examined based on available evidence. Authorities have not yet announced any conclusions regarding the guilt or innocence of the accused persons. Legal proceedings will continue in accordance with established procedures.
The development comes at a time when Sushanta Ghosh is also reported to be absconding in connection with another case involving alleged extortion. Law enforcement agencies are said to be pursuing multiple leads in an effort to locate him and ensure his appearance before investigators.
The Trinamool Congress has not issued a detailed public response regarding the latest allegations at the time of reporting. Political parties and legal experts have emphasized that the matter should be allowed to proceed through the judicial process and that conclusions should not be drawn before the completion of the investigation.
Cases involving allegations of forged documents and disputed commercial transactions often require extensive verification of records, witness testimonies and financial evidence. Police are expected to continue gathering material evidence before deciding on further legal action.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional details may emerge as the inquiry progresses. Officials have urged the public to rely on verified information and await the findings of the investigation before drawing conclusions regarding the allegations.
