A political dispute has emerged in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra alleged that a gathering of protesters targeted a party office in Kaliganj during a workers' meeting. According to Moitra, the crowd threw eggs, mud, and stones at the building, and one of the eggs struck her during the incident.
Moitra said she had visited the Trinamool Congress office to attend a meeting with party workers when the protest began. In posts shared on social media, she alleged that the crowd remained outside the office for several hours and accused the police of failing to take timely action to disperse the protesters.
The Krishnanagar MP also claimed that the gathering increased in size while law enforcement personnel were present near the location. She alleged that police did not intervene effectively during the incident and later shared videos that appeared to show protesters raising slogans and throwing objects toward the office building.
Following the incident, police escorted Mahua Moitra out of the premises. Responding to the allegations, Krishnanagar Superintendent of Police Atul V rejected claims of police inaction. He stated that officers reached the location after receiving information about the protest and repeatedly requested the MP to leave the premises in the interest of public safety.
According to the Superintendent of Police, discussions were held between the police and Mahua Moitra before she exited the office later in the evening. He maintained that the police acted in accordance with established procedures to ensure the situation did not escalate further.
The Bharatiya Janata Party also denied the allegations made by the Trinamool Congress leader. West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya claimed that the incident was not linked to BJP workers and suggested that it resulted from internal disagreements within the Trinamool Congress. He dismissed the allegations against his party and criticized the political narrative surrounding the incident.
The exchange of allegations has intensified political tensions between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Leaders from both parties have presented differing versions of the events, while authorities have not publicly identified those responsible for the alleged attack.
As of now, no official investigation has concluded who was behind the incident. Police have not announced any arrests or confirmed whether criminal cases have been registered against any individuals involved. Officials are expected to examine available evidence, including video recordings and witness statements, before reaching any conclusions.
