At the same time, the party leadership will have to balance the expectations of senior legislators with the need to maintain an effective ministerial team.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is facing fresh internal tensions after 19 legislators reportedly held a closed-door meeting in Srinagar and raised concerns over the recent Cabinet reshuffle under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The meeting has brought attention to growing dissatisfaction among some party members who believe that senior leaders have not received adequate representation in the government.

According to reports, the legislators discussed their concerns over the composition of the Council of Ministers, the role of certain party functionaries and the distribution of administrative responsibilities. They reportedly prepared a joint resolution seeking changes in the Cabinet and the removal of two leaders whom they accused of interfering in party and administrative affairs. The legislators are also said to have demanded direct discussions with the Chief Minister.

The National Conference leadership, however, has rejected suggestions that the meeting represents a rebellion within the party. A party representative described the gathering as routine and denied that it indicated a major internal split.

Closed-Door Meeting in Srinagar

The meeting reportedly took place on Friday evening, October 30, at the Srinagar residence of National Conference MLA Qaiser Jamsheed Lone. Reports said that 19 MLAs attended the gathering and discussed their dissatisfaction with the recent political and administrative decisions.

The legislators reportedly included representatives from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region. Their discussions focused on the Cabinet reshuffle, the exclusion of several senior legislators from ministerial positions and the need for better regional representation.

Some of the lawmakers reportedly believe that seniority and political experience were not given sufficient importance while selecting ministers. They have also raised concerns about the influence of certain individuals in party and government decisions.

The legislators are said to have prepared a resolution outlining their demands. They reportedly want the document to be submitted to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah so that the party leadership can consider their concerns.

Cabinet Reshuffle Triggers Dissatisfaction

The latest disagreement follows the Cabinet expansion carried out by the Omar Abdullah government on October 27. Four new ministers were inducted into the Council of Ministers. They were Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mir Saifullah, Shamim Firdous and Altaf Ahmad Wani, also known as Altaf Kaloo.

Although the reshuffle brought new members into the Cabinet, it reportedly disappointed several senior legislators who had expected to be considered for ministerial positions. Some party members questioned the selection process and argued that the government should provide opportunities to experienced leaders who have represented their constituencies for several years.

The disagreement has also involved concerns about the continuation of certain ministers and the allocation of portfolios. Some legislators reportedly want ministers who have completed two years in office to be replaced to provide opportunities for new faces.

The dissatisfaction has not been limited to the Cabinet alone. The legislators have reportedly raised objections to the involvement of certain party leaders and officials in administrative and organisational matters.

Legislators Seek Changes in Party Leadership

Apart from demanding a Cabinet reshuffle, the group has reportedly sought the removal of two leaders whom they accuse of interfering in party affairs and administrative decisions. The names mentioned in reports include Nasir Aslam Wani and Shammi Oberoi.

The legislators are said to have expressed concern about the influence of people close to the Chief Minister in decision-making. They reportedly want a clearer distinction between party responsibilities and government administration.

Another issue raised during the discussions was the need for fair representation for different regions. Some legislators believe that the interests of Jammu and the Pir Panjal region should receive greater consideration in the government's decisions.

The group has reportedly insisted on holding direct discussions with Omar Abdullah instead of communicating through his aides. This demand indicates that the legislators want their concerns to be addressed by the Chief Minister himself.

Farooq Abdullah's Role in Resolving the Dispute

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah is expected to play an important role in addressing the concerns raised by the legislators. Reports said that he had spoken with some dissatisfied members and attempted to find a way to resolve the disagreement.

According to one report, Farooq Abdullah offered to consider a Cabinet reshuffle after a period of around one and a half years and assured legislators who had not received ministerial positions that they could be accommodated later. However, the dissatisfied members reportedly did not accept the proposal and continued to seek changes sooner.

The legislators are said to want the party leadership to reconsider the present Cabinet arrangement rather than postpone the issue. Their reported position has added pressure on the senior leadership to find a solution that prevents further dissatisfaction.

Meanwhile, senior leader Mubarak Gul was removed from the post of party general secretary after the meeting. The development has added another dimension to the internal disagreement, particularly because Gul was among the legislators reportedly dissatisfied with the recent Cabinet decisions.

National Conference Denies Reports of Rebellion

Despite reports of dissatisfaction among the legislators, the National Conference has denied that the party is facing a rebellion. Party representatives have described the meeting as routine and rejected claims that it represents an organised challenge to Omar Abdullah's leadership.

The difference between the reported demands of some legislators and the party's public response has drawn attention to the situation within the ruling party. While the lawmakers are reportedly seeking changes in the Cabinet and party organisation, the leadership has maintained that the meeting should not be viewed as a major political crisis.

There has been no official announcement that the Chief Minister has agreed to the reported demands. The outcome will depend on discussions between the legislators and the party leadership in the coming days.

Political Significance for the Omar Abdullah Government

The developments come at a sensitive time for the National Conference government in Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah is leading the administration after the party's victory in the 2024 Assembly elections. The government has several political and administrative issues to address, including regional development, employment, governance and the demand for restoration of statehood.

Internal disagreements over Cabinet positions could create additional challenges for the government if they are not resolved through discussions. At the same time, the party leadership will have to balance the expectations of senior legislators with the need to maintain an effective ministerial team.

For now, the reported meeting has highlighted differences within the National Conference following the Cabinet reshuffle. Whether the leadership will accept the legislators' demands or find another arrangement remains to be seen. The party's response and the Chief Minister's next steps are likely to determine how the situation develops.

They have also raised concerns about the influence of certain individuals in party and government decisions.
