The Aam Aadmi Party has announced its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, beginning its preparations for the next electoral contest in the state. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been named as the party's candidate from Dhuri, the constituency he won in the 2022 Assembly elections by a margin of more than 58,000 votes.
The announcement was made on October 31, following a meeting of the party's Political Affairs Committee in Delhi. The meeting was attended by senior AAP leaders, including national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other party representatives. The party said that candidate selection involved discussions and assessments of public feedback.
Bhagwant Mann to Contest Again from Dhuri
Bhagwant Mann's nomination from Dhuri is one of the key highlights of the first candidate list. Mann represented the constituency in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and secured a victory with a margin exceeding 58,000 votes. By announcing his candidature well ahead of the next election, AAP has confirmed that he will seek another term from the same constituency.
Mann congratulated the candidates selected in the first list and expressed confidence in their chances of winning. He also indicated that the party had considered public surveys and feedback while finalising the names.
His decision to contest again from Dhuri is an important part of AAP's initial election strategy. The constituency is in the Sangrur region of Punjab and has been politically significant for the Chief Minister. The early announcement gives Mann and the other selected candidates time to engage with voters and focus on constituency-level issues.
First List Includes 40 Candidates
The first list includes several prominent party leaders and sitting legislators from different parts of Punjab. Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has been nominated from Kotkapura. Other notable candidates include Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal from Ajnala, Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar from Amritsar South and Balkar Singh from Kartarpur.
The party has also announced candidates for several constituencies in the Ludhiana region. Sanjeev Arora has been nominated from Ludhiana West, Daljit Singh Grewal from Ludhiana East, Ashok Prashar from Ludhiana Central and Chaudhary Madan Lal Bagga from Ludhiana North.
Other candidates named in the list include Harmeet Singh Sandhu from Tarn Taran, Inderjit Kaur Mann from Nakodar, Bram Shanker Sharma from Hoshiarpur, Jai Krishan Singh Rouri from Garhshankar and Dinesh Chadha from Rupnagar.
The list also includes candidates from Moga, Patiala, Jalalabad, Fazilka, Muktsar, Jaitu, Talwandi Sabo and other constituencies. According to the announced list, all 40 candidates are sitting legislators, indicating the party's decision to continue with its existing representatives for these seats in the first round of nominations.

AAP's Candidate Selection Strategy
The party's candidate selection process was discussed at a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee. According to Bhagwant Mann, the party considered public surveys and feedback before confirming the candidates. Leaders who received positive responses from voters were included in the first list.
The early announcement is expected to give the selected candidates additional time to prepare for the election campaign. They can focus on meeting residents, understanding local concerns and communicating the party's plans to voters. It also allows the party to begin organising its campaign at the constituency level well before the official election schedule is announced.
AAP has chosen to announce 40 names in its first list rather than releasing all its candidates at once. The announcement covers constituencies across Punjab's major regions, including Majha, Doaba and Malwa. The remaining constituencies will be addressed through subsequent candidate announcements.
Background of the 2022 Punjab Assembly Elections
The 2027 election will be an important contest for AAP as it seeks to retain power in Punjab. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the party secured a decisive victory by winning 92 of the state's 117 Assembly seats. The Congress won 18 seats in that election.
Bhagwant Mann became Chief Minister after the party's victory and has led the state government since then. The next election will give voters an opportunity to assess the government's performance and decide which party should form the next administration.
The 2027 Punjab Assembly elections are expected to take place early in the year. However, the Election Commission of India has not yet announced the official polling dates. The current five-year term of the 117-member Punjab Assembly is scheduled to end in March 2027.

Political Contest Ahead of the 2027 Elections
The announcement of the first 40 candidates marks the beginning of AAP's preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. The party will seek to defend its 2022 electoral mandate while presenting its record in government to voters.
For the selected candidates, the early announcement provides an opportunity to strengthen their connection with their respective constituencies. They are likely to focus on local development, public services, infrastructure and other issues that matter to residents.
The decision to renominate sitting legislators also indicates the party's preference for continuity in the constituencies covered by this list. At the same time, the performance of these candidates and the response from voters will be important factors as the election campaign develops.
With Bhagwant Mann confirmed as the candidate from Dhuri, AAP has announced one of the most prominent names in its first list. Further announcements from the party and decisions by other political parties are expected to shape the contest in the months ahead.
The official election schedule is still awaited. Until then, political parties are expected to continue their preparations, assess constituency-level support and develop their campaign strategies for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
