Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has raised questions regarding the timeline for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, urging the Union Government to provide greater clarity on when the process will be completed.
Speaking on the issue, Chidambaram reiterated the Congress party's long-standing position on the constitutional changes made in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. He described the abrogation of Article 370 as a constitutional issue and questioned the delay in restoring full statehood to the region.
Chidambaram asked the government to specify what it means when it states that statehood will be restored "soon." He said that a clear timeline would help address public concerns and provide certainty regarding the future administrative structure of Jammu and Kashmir.
The former Union Minister also expressed concern over the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. According to him, the decision has broader implications for India's federal structure, and he argued that discussions on constitutional and administrative matters should take place through democratic and parliamentary processes.
The Congress party has consistently maintained that the restoration of statehood should be completed at the earliest. Party leaders have continued to raise the issue during parliamentary debates, public meetings, and interactions with the media.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah also appealed to the Union Government to honour its commitment regarding the restoration of statehood. He urged the Centre to fulfil the assurances given to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed hope that the process would be completed without unnecessary delay.
The Union Government has previously stated on multiple occasions, including before the Supreme Court, that statehood would be restored to Jammu and Kashmir at an appropriate time after the completion of the electoral process and the return of normalcy. However, no specific date has been officially announced for the restoration.
In December 2023, while delivering its judgment on petitions challenging the constitutional changes made in August 2019, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the abrogation of Article 370. The Court also recorded the Union Government's statement that statehood would be restored to Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest possible opportunity, while the Union Territory of Ladakh would continue under its present administrative arrangement.
The issue of statehood continues to remain an important political subject, with various political parties advocating different approaches to the constitutional and administrative future of Jammu and Kashmir. Leaders across the political spectrum have continued to express their views through parliamentary discussions, public statements, and political campaigns.
