A Parliamentary Standing Committee has recommended the appointment of a dedicated Polar Ambassador as part of efforts to strengthen India's strategic, scientific, and diplomatic engagement in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The proposal is aimed at enhancing India's role in polar affairs while supporting its long-term foreign policy and research objectives.
According to the committee, the growing geopolitical, environmental, and scientific importance of the polar regions makes it necessary for India to adopt a more focused diplomatic approach. The proposed Polar Ambassador would coordinate international engagement, represent India's interests in multilateral forums, and strengthen cooperation with countries involved in polar research and governance.
The committee observed that climate change, melting ice caps, and emerging shipping routes have increased global interest in the Arctic. These developments have made the region strategically significant for economic, environmental, and security reasons. As a result, several countries have expanded their presence in the Arctic through scientific research, diplomatic engagement, and policy initiatives.
India has been actively involved in polar research for several decades. The country has established research stations in Antarctica that support scientific studies in areas such as climate science, glaciology, atmospheric research, biodiversity, and earth sciences.
