PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss has called upon both the Central Government and the Tamil Nadu Government to take urgent measures to regulate the increasing prices of construction materials, stating that the continued rise in costs is placing a heavy burden on ordinary citizens and the construction industry.
In a statement, Dr Ramadoss expressed concern over the sharp increase in the prices of essential construction materials such as M-sand, B-sand, cement, and steel. He noted that these materials are fundamental to residential and commercial construction projects, and any substantial increase in their prices directly impacts construction costs across the state.
According to Dr Ramadoss, middle-income and low-income families are among the worst affected by the price rise. Many families save for years with the dream of building their own homes, but the increasing cost of construction materials has made that goal more difficult to achieve. He stated that the financial burden on home builders has grown considerably in recent months as material costs continue to rise.
The PMK leader also highlighted the broader economic impact of rising construction expenses. The construction sector is one of the largest employment-generating industries in Tamil Nadu and provides livelihood opportunities to a large number of workers, including engineers, contractors, masons, carpenters, electricians, painters, and daily wage labourers.
He pointed out that when construction activity slows down due to high costs, employment opportunities in the sector are also affected. A decline in construction projects can have a ripple effect on several related industries, including transportation, manufacturing, and building material supply chains.
Dr Ramadoss urged the authorities to examine the reasons behind the increase in prices and take corrective measures where necessary. He called for closer monitoring of market conditions and appropriate intervention to prevent unreasonable price escalation. He also emphasized the need to ensure that construction materials remain affordable for both individual home builders and the real estate sector.
