Violence and protests were reported in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh after the Bharatiya Janata Party announced its candidate for the upcoming Assembly bypoll. The unrest followed the party's decision to nominate Ashutosh Tiwari, a move that reportedly disappointed supporters of senior BJP leader Narottam Mishra.
According to police officials, a large number of protesters gathered soon after the candidate announcement and staged demonstrations in the district. During the protest, a section of the demonstrators blocked a national highway, leading to major traffic disruptions for several hours. Commuters and transport services were affected until authorities were able to clear the route.
Officials stated that the situation became tense when some protesters allegedly resorted to stone pelting, prompting police to intervene to maintain law and order. During the clashes, several police personnel reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to disperse the crowd and restore normalcy.
Law enforcement agencies deployed additional security personnel to the area to prevent the situation from escalating further. After prolonged efforts, police succeeded in removing the road blockade and reopening the highway for public transport. Traffic movement gradually returned to normal following the clearance operation.
Authorities also confirmed that some individuals were taken into custody in connection with the incident. Legal action has been initiated based on the findings of the preliminary investigation. Police officials said they are reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify those involved in acts of violence or damage to public property.
The protests were triggered after the BJP officially named Ashutosh Tiwari as its candidate for the Assembly bypoll. Some supporters of former Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra expressed dissatisfaction with the party's decision and demanded that the leadership reconsider the candidate selection.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has not announced any change in its candidate following the protests. Party leaders are expected to continue preparations for the upcoming bypoll in accordance with the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India.
