Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns over the India China border situation, alleging that Chinese forces are preventing Indian troops from carrying out patrols in certain areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking at a Congress event, Gandhi questioned the Union government over the reported situation and asked what Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior ministers were doing to address the issue. He also criticised the government's foreign policy and its handling of international conflicts.
Gandhi claimed that he had received information suggesting that Indian forces were being prevented from patrolling areas that India considers important along the Line of Actual Control. He argued that developments along the border should be openly discussed and that the government should provide clarity to the public.
The Congress leader also referred to the 2020 Galwan Valley confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops while criticising the government's handling of the India China border issue. He questioned the government's earlier statements and argued that national security concerns should receive greater public attention.
However, government sources have rejected allegations of a gradual Chinese encroachment into Arunachal Pradesh. Officials have said there is no evidence supporting claims that China is slowly occupying Indian territory in the region. Similar reports circulating recently have also been described by official sources as lacking credible evidence.
The government side has pointed to infrastructure development and existing mechanisms for managing the India China border. Authorities have maintained that border issues are handled through established protocols and discussions between the two countries.
The latest political exchange comes amid continued sensitivity along the India China frontier. Arunachal Pradesh remains a particularly important part of the eastern sector of the disputed boundary. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has also rejected recent reports of Chinese encroachment in the state. He said the Indian Army is safeguarding the territory and maintaining patrols in the region.
The border issue remains a major component of India China relations, particularly following the military tensions that began in 2020. Both countries have since taken diplomatic and military steps aimed at maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control.
India has repeatedly emphasised that peace and tranquillity along the border are important for the broader relationship between the two countries. The Ministry of External Affairs recently reiterated that maintaining peace along the disputed frontier remains essential to stable bilateral ties.
The latest allegations by Rahul Gandhi and the government's response have therefore added a fresh political dimension to the ongoing discussion over border security. While Gandhi has called for greater transparency and questioned the government's handling of the situation, official sources have rejected claims of Chinese encroachment.
