West Bengal has announced a major educational and commemorative initiative centred on Syama Prasad Mookerjee, with his life, legacy and contributions set to be incorporated into the state's academic curriculum from the 2027 academic year.
The state government has decided to introduce the subject in phases, covering students from the school level through universities. The initiative is intended to familiarise younger generations with Mookerjee's role in Bengal's history and his contributions to public life and the development of independent India.
According to the announcement, the curriculum will cover Mookerjee's contributions to the formation of West Bengal, his nationalist ideas, his work in the legislature and his role as independent India's first Industry Minister. His tenure as Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta will also form part of the broader academic focus.
The decision comes as part of programmes planned to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The West Bengal government has constituted a special committee to oversee various activities connected with the anniversary celebrations and to plan initiatives highlighting his historical legacy.
One of the major projects announced as part of the celebrations is the construction of a 125 foot statue of Mookerjee at Eco Park in Kolkata. A museum and other facilities are also planned alongside the statue. The government has directed the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation to begin work on the project, with the proposed inauguration targeted for July 6, 2027.
The government is also planning to publish material on Mookerjee's life and contributions. Officials have been asked to explore ways to present historical information to students and the wider public through educational and cultural initiatives.
Another important part of the programme is the restoration of Mookerjee's ancestral home at Jirat in Hooghly district. The site is expected to be developed as a heritage location, with plans for a library and museum. The restoration project is intended to preserve the historical connection associated with Mookerjee and provide an opportunity for visitors and students to learn more about his life.
The move to include Mookerjee's contributions in the curriculum is likely to bring greater attention to his role in Bengal's political and educational history.
