The Tamil Nadu Government has presented its first Budget for the financial year 2026, outlining a broad roadmap for education, welfare, infrastructure, and economic development. The Budget introduces several initiatives intended to strengthen public services, improve educational outcomes, and expand welfare benefits across the state while setting an ambitious long-term economic growth target.
One of the major highlights of the Budget is the allocation of Rs 44,527 crore to the School Education Department. These include marriage assistance schemes that provide silk sarees and gold coins to eligible beneficiaries under existing government programmes. The Budget also proposes gold rings for newborn children under a newly announced welfare initiative, subject to the eligibility criteria and implementation guidelines to be notified by the government.
The government said these programmes are designed to strengthen social security, support economically weaker families, and encourage inclusive development across different sections of society.
Addressing public health and social issues, the Budget places significant emphasis on preventing substance abuse among young people. The government plans to implement awareness campaigns, strengthen rehabilitation efforts, and coordinate with educational institutions to reduce the impact of drug abuse and other harmful substances.
The education sector will also witness investments in upgrading classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, and digital infrastructure. The government said improving learning environments and expanding access to quality education remain among its highest priorities.
The Budget outlines a broader economic vision that aims to transform Tamil Nadu into a USD 1.5 trillion economy by the year 2036. According to the government, this objective will be pursued through increased industrial investment, infrastructure development, manufacturing growth, technology adoption, skill development, and employment generation.
Apart from education and welfare, the Budget also focuses on strengthening public infrastructure, improving healthcare services, encouraging entrepreneurship, and promoting sustainable economic growth. The government stated that investments across multiple sectors are expected to improve the quality of life while creating new opportunities for businesses and employment.
