Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has called for renewed dialogue with Karnataka over the long-standing Cauvery water dispute, highlighting the need for cooperation while reaffirming the state's commitment to safeguarding its water rights through legal means.
In his remarks on the issue, the Chief Minister emphasised that disputes involving inter-state river water should be addressed through meaningful discussions and constitutional processes. He stated that maintaining communication between neighbouring states is essential for finding practical and lasting solutions that benefit people on both sides.
The Cauvery river has remained one of the most significant inter-state water-sharing issues in southern India for several decades. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have frequently differed over the release and distribution of Cauvery water, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall. The issue has been addressed through legal proceedings, tribunal awards and directions issued by the courts and statutory authorities over the years.
Referring to Tamil Nadu's long-standing approach, Vijay noted that the state has consistently pursued legal remedies to protect its rights over Cauvery water. He recalled that efforts to resolve the issue through constitutional and legal mechanisms have continued for decades and remain an important part of the state's strategy.
At the same time, the Chief Minister stressed that legal action and dialogue are not mutually exclusive. He said discussions between the two states can play an important role in reducing tensions, improving cooperation and ensuring that decisions are implemented effectively. According to him, constructive engagement is necessary while continuing to uphold the legal rights of Tamil Nadu.
Vijay also stated that the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu, particularly farmers who depend on Cauvery water for irrigation, would remain the government's highest priority. He reaffirmed that his administration would take every necessary step within the framework of the law to protect the state's interests.
The Chief Minister further indicated that he was prepared to face political criticism if it was necessary to safeguard the welfare of the people. He maintained that decisions related to the Cauvery issue should be guided by public interest rather than short-term political considerations.
The Cauvery dispute has historically affected agriculture, drinking water supply and reservoir management in both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. During years of low rainfall, disagreements over water releases have often intensified, making timely coordination between the two states increasingly important.
Experts have frequently stated that effective implementation of existing legal mechanisms, combined with continuous dialogue between the concerned states, can help improve water management and reduce disputes. Cooperation in areas such as rainfall monitoring, reservoir operations and water-sharing schedules is often viewed as an important element in addressing the issue.
The Chief Minister's remarks signal an approach that combines legal safeguards with open communication.
