Cricket coach and former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar has made a return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the franchise's assistant coach for the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). This development comes shortly after Nayar’s departure from his role at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Nayar, who previously served in a coaching capacity with KKR until 2022, is widely credited with mentoring several key Indian players, including Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, and Rinku Singh. His return is expected to bring a boost to the team's overall performance and bench strength, especially in the areas of middle-order stability and player mindset training.
Franchise Statement
In an official statement, KKR welcomed Nayar back, highlighting his contributions in the past. “We are thrilled to have Abhishek Nayar return to our coaching setup. His understanding of the game and focus on mental and skill-based development have always been valuable assets to the team,” the statement read.
From BCCI to IPL Dugout
Nayar’s recent removal from the BCCI setup came as part of a broader reshuffle at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Despite being relieved of duties, he remains highly respected in the cricketing community for his coaching acumen and player-centric approach.
His move back to the IPL fold comes at a time when franchises are increasingly looking to invest in coaches who can double as mentors. With IPL 2025 getting competitive, Nayar’s experience could prove instrumental in steering young players in pressure situations.
A Coach Known for Transformation
Nayar’s coaching journey is often lauded for its personal investment in players’ growth. He played a pivotal role in Dinesh Karthik’s T20 comeback and has worked behind the scenes to improve the performances of rising talents. His return is expected to strengthen KKR's support staff, working closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit and skipper Shreyas Iyer.
What This Means for KKR
Currently positioned in the mid-table, KKR has had a mixed start to the 2025 season. The addition of Nayar may help the team recalibrate its approach in tight games, particularly in rotating the strike and closing out chases.
As the IPL 2025 season intensifies, Nayar’s return could very well be the x-factor KKR needs to push for a playoff spot.
