Abhishek Sharma Sets T20I Six-Hitting Record in 2026 Despite India’s Defeat Against West Indies
India opener Abhishek Sharma created a new milestone in T20 International cricket during the fourth match against West Indies in Hyderabad on October 14, 2026. The left-handed batter struck his 69th six of the calendar year, moving past Suryakumar Yadav’s previous record of 68 sixes in a year in T20Is. However, the individual achievement came on a disappointing evening for India, who lost the match by 24 runs as West Indies levelled the five-match series.
Abhishek reached the landmark in the ninth over of India’s chase when he hit West Indies bowler Shamar Springer over the boundary. The two Indian batters had been tied at 68 sixes before the shot took Abhishek’s tally to 69 in 2026. Suryakumar had established his previous mark in 2022.
The achievement further underlined Abhishek’s aggressive approach in the shortest format. He has developed a reputation for attacking bowling from the beginning of an innings and regularly clearing the boundary. According to reports following the fourth T20I, he had accumulated 102 sixes in 68 T20I innings.
Abhishek Sharma Moves Ahead of Suryakumar Yadav
Abhishek’s latest achievement places him at the top of the calendar-year six-hitting list among batters representing full-member nations in men’s T20 Internationals. Suryakumar Yadav previously held the record with 68 sixes in 2022.
Abhishek himself had hit 54 sixes in 2025, while Ishan Kishan had recorded 52 sixes in 2026 at the time of the reported standings. Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan had hit 45 sixes in 2025.
The numbers reflect Abhishek’s ability to generate power and attack different types of bowling. His approach can put opposition teams under pressure during the powerplay and middle overs. The record also highlights his growing role in India’s T20I batting line-up.
Nevertheless, the milestone did not translate into a substantial contribution in the fourth match. Abhishek scored 29 runs from 24 deliveries, an innings that was slower than his usual attacking performances. He struggled to find his rhythm before being dismissed, leaving India needing other batters to maintain the required scoring rate.
West Indies Post a Huge Total of 247
West Indies delivered a powerful batting performance after India elected to field first. The visitors finished their 20 overs at 247 for three, setting India a target of 248 runs.
Captain Shai Hope led the innings with an unbeaten 102 from 50 balls. His century continued an impressive run of form during the series and helped West Indies build a total that placed significant pressure on the Indian batting line-up.
Sherfane Rutherford also played an important role, remaining unbeaten on 49 from 26 deliveries. His contribution, combined with Hope’s innings, helped West Indies accelerate in the latter stages and finish with a formidable score.
The visitors’ total demanded another exceptional run chase from India. The teams had already been involved in a high-scoring contest earlier in the series, when India successfully chased a target of 250 in the second T20I. That previous result showed that a large target was not beyond India’s reach, but repeating the performance proved difficult.
Sanju Samson Provides India With a Quick Start
India began the chase aggressively, with Sanju Samson taking responsibility at the top of the order. Samson scored 56 runs and helped India reach 60 in the first four overs, giving the hosts early momentum.
However, India were unable to sustain that scoring rate throughout the innings. The dismissal of Abhishek and the subsequent loss of wickets disrupted the chase. West Indies gradually gained control as India struggled to build partnerships and keep pace with the required run rate.
Despite the early momentum, India finished on 223 and fell 24 runs short of the target. The result demonstrated the difficulty of chasing a total close to 250 when wickets fall regularly during the middle overs and the lower order faces increasing pressure.
West Indies’ bowling attack played a decisive role in defending the total. Keemo Paul took five wickets, helping dismantle India’s chase and ensuring that the visitors secured an important victory.
West Indies Level the Series
The 24-run victory brought West Indies level in the five-match T20I series at 2-2. The result set up a decisive fifth match, with both teams having an opportunity to claim the series.
For India, Abhishek’s record was a positive individual highlight, but the team will need a more consistent batting performance in the deciding match. The top order will be expected to provide a strong start, while the middle order must build partnerships and maintain the scoring rate against a competitive West Indies attack.
West Indies, meanwhile, will take confidence from their powerful batting display and disciplined bowling. Hope’s century and Rutherford’s late-innings contribution gave the team a commanding total, while Paul’s five-wicket haul proved crucial during the chase.
Abhishek Sharma’s 69 sixes remain a significant achievement in the 2026 T20I calendar year. His record-breaking shot against Springer added another milestone to his international career. Yet the fourth T20I also showed that individual records and team results can tell different stories: while Abhishek made history, West Indies claimed the victory and forced the series into a final-match showdown.
