Amid widespread speculation and public curiosity surrounding Virat Kohli’s decision to step away from certain cricket formats, BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has finally offered clarity. In a recent press interaction, Agarkar addressed the rumours that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may have influenced or pressured Kohli to step down.
He stated that the decision was based on mutual understanding and timing. “It’s not about forcing anyone. These are decisions taken after conversations with the player. Maybe it was time,” said Agarkar when asked directly about the exit.
Virat Kohli, one of the most prominent and successful cricketers in Indian history, had already stepped down from T20I and ODI captaincy and later gave up Test leadership. His absence from recent squads led to fresh speculation that he might be preparing for a larger break or even retirement from certain formats. However, Agarkar’s remarks suggest that the decision came from Kohli himself in consultation with selectors and team management.
“There’s a natural cycle in cricket. Players come in, serve for a long time, and sometimes, they take a step back to allow the next generation to take over,” Agarkar explained. He praised Kohli for his immense contributions over the years, noting that his professionalism, fitness, and commitment have set new benchmarks in Indian cricket.
Addressing questions about the future of the team without Kohli in certain formats, Agarkar reassured fans that Indian cricket is in a strong position. “We are fortunate to have a deep talent pool. While Kohli’s absence will be felt, it opens up opportunities for younger players to step in and prove themselves. That’s how every great team evolves,” he said.
Agarkar also emphasized that Kohli remains available for selection and that no doors are closed. “There has been no talk of retirement from Virat officially. He remains part of Indian cricket and could return in any format depending on team needs and his own readiness,” he added.
Fans across the country had expressed disappointment over the lack of clarity from both Kohli and the board. Agarkar’s comments now provide insight into the nature of the transition. The remark “Maybe it was time” has resonated widely, suggesting that even legendary careers must eventually shift to make room for new dynamics.
As India builds towards upcoming tournaments, including the next World Test Championship cycle and ICC white-ball events, selectors are focused on maintaining a blend of experience and youth. Kohli’s leadership legacy and batting milestones will continue to inspire future generations.
In the meantime, cricket enthusiasts will be watching closely to see when and where the former captain makes his next appearance in the Indian jersey.
