Arsenal are facing a serious injury crisis ahead of their crucial Champions League clash against Monaco on Wednesday, December 11. The Gunners are dealing with a growing list of sidelined players, significantly affecting their squad depth and preparation for the high-stakes fixture.
Gabriel Magalhães and Riccardo Calafiori are already out of contention, with both players unable to feature in the upcoming match. The injury issues have continued to mount since Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Fulham, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ben White, and Thomas Partey all picking up knocks. Takehiro Tomiyasu is also struggling with an injury, further depleting Arsenal’s already thin wing-back positions. To make matters worse, Jurrien Timber missed Tuesday’s training session, adding another concern to an already stretched defense.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed the mounting injury woes at his pre-match press conference, confirming that the team will be missing several key players for the Monaco clash. "We have to manage a lot of players. Some of them won’t be fit for tomorrow, some of them are still doubts. We have 24 hours to make those decisions. Hopefully, we make the right ones," Arteta said, acknowledging the tough task of filling in the gaps in the squad.
In the face of these challenges, Arteta may turn to Kieran Tierney, who could make his first appearance for Arsenal this season. Although Tierney has been a part of the squad, he has not yet featured in a competitive match this term. The Scottish left-back has fallen down the pecking order, but with so many players unavailable, Arteta confirmed that Tierney is "ready" for action. "He’s training really well and will have an opportunity for sure. He’s earned it. He’s willing to do it, and when that happens, we have to give him a chance," Arteta said, signaling that Tierney could play a pivotal role in the absence of other options.
Currently, Arsenal sit on 10 points from five matches in the Champions League group stage, and a victory over Monaco would almost guarantee their place in the knockout stages. Such a win would also improve their chances of finishing in the top eight, securing a direct spot in the Round of 16 and easing the pressure for the remainder of the competition.
With key players missing, Arteta will need to make crucial decisions about his lineup and tactics. Despite the injuries, the manager will be hoping his squad can dig deep and deliver a result that would keep them on track for progression in Europe’s elite competition.
