Daniel Vettori, currently serving as Australia's assistant coach, will momentarily step away from his national team duties to participate in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The high-stakes auction is scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, coinciding with the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia in Perth, which starts on November 22.
The decision to temporarily leave his role with the Australian team highlights Vettori's dual commitments. Appointed SRH’s head coach in 2024, the former New Zealand captain has balanced his IPL coaching responsibilities alongside his duties as one of three assistant coaches under Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald since 2022. Cricket Australia has supported Vettori’s choice, emphasizing his significant contributions to both roles.
“Dan will complete the final preparations for the first Test in Perth before attending the IPL auction. He will then rejoin the team for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” an Australia team spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. Vettori’s absence is expected to be brief, ensuring he returns in time for the second Test in Adelaide.
The 45-year-old brings a wealth of coaching experience to both SRH and Australia. As SRH head coach, he will oversee the franchise’s strategy at the auction table as they aim to strengthen their squad following the retention of five key players. The two-day auction is anticipated to be crucial for SRH, as teams prepare for another competitive IPL season.
Vettori’s temporary departure underscores the evolving dynamics of modern cricket, where coaches and players alike often juggle international and franchise commitments. While he will miss part of the Perth Test, Vettori’s presence at the IPL auction underscores the significance of the event in shaping the future of one of cricket’s most lucrative leagues.
