Australia has unveiled its ODI squad for the upcoming five-match series against England, set to begin on Thursday, September 19, and the selection includes a notable new face: Mahli Beardman, the Under-19 World Cup winner who has earned his first call-up to the senior team.
The 19-year-old Beardman has been making waves since his standout performances in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year. He was instrumental in Australia's successful campaign, particularly shining in the final against India, where he was named 'Player of the Match' for his exceptional bowling. His inclusion in the senior squad is a significant step in his burgeoning cricket career.
Beardman joins the squad amid a series of injury issues that have impacted the Australian team. Xavier Bartlett sustained a strain during the first T20I against England, while Nathan Ellis was pulled from the Scotland series due to an injury sustained during The Hundred. Spencer Johnson is also unavailable due to injury. In addition, captain Pat Cummins has been rested for this series to manage his workload.
Despite these challenges, the ODI World Cup champions will have the benefit of their experienced pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who will bring their expertise to the series. Beardman’s inclusion is a testament to his impressive form and the selectors' confidence in his potential to contribute at the senior level.
