Steve Smith is set to reclaim his favored No. 4 batting position for Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, which kicks off on November 22, 2024, in Perth. This announcement was made by Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, marking a significant shift following Smith’s recent foray as an opener after David Warner's retirement.
Smith, who had willingly stepped up to open the innings, struggled to find his footing in the role. His performance was disappointing, with a total of just 171 runs across eight innings at an average of 28.50, leading to mounting pressure and criticism. His difficulties were particularly pronounced during the Test series against New Zealand, where he managed a mere 51 runs in four innings, highlighting the challenges he faced at the top of the order.
The decision to shift Smith back to No. 4 came after extensive discussions between him, captain Pat Cummins, and head coach Andrew McDonald. Bailey noted that Smith had expressed a desire to revert to his previous position, and both Cummins and McDonald agreed to the change. "Pat, Andrew, and Steve had been having ongoing conversations, separate from the untimely injury to Cameron Green," Bailey explained. "Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position, and Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order for the summer."
Smith’s return to the middle order is further complicated by the injury to Cameron Green, who will miss the series after undergoing surgery for a back injury. Green had been an integral part of the middle order, and his absence creates a significant gap in the Australian batting lineup. This situation necessitates filling both the opening and No. 4 positions, presenting a unique challenge for the selectors.
Bailey acknowledged the potential difficulties ahead but also expressed confidence in the talent available to the team. Players like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and promising young talent Sam Konstas are all under consideration to step into these crucial roles. “He’s in the mix, as are plenty of others,” Bailey said regarding Konstas, emphasizing the importance of not placing undue pressure on the young player.
In preparation for the series, Australia A will engage in two first-class matches against India A. This will provide an opportunity for openers like Bancroft, Harris, and Konstas to showcase their form and stake their claim for a place in the Test side. The Australia A squad for these tour matches includes a mix of experience and youth, with Nathan McSweeney captaining a talented lineup that features Scott Boland, Jordan Buckingham, Cooper Connolly, and Todd Murphy, among others.
As the Australian team gears up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, all eyes will be on how Steve Smith adapts back to his familiar No. 4 role and how the selectors address the challenges posed by injuries in the lineup. With the rivalry against India always intense and competitive, the upcoming series promises to be a thrilling contest, with Smith playing a pivotal role in Australia's batting strategy.
