In a significant disciplinary move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed hefty fines on Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra. The sanctions follow alleged violations of the IPL Code of Conduct during and after the high-stakes IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
According to a statement released by the BCCI, both individuals were found guilty of separate breaches during the encounter that took place at the Wankhede Stadium. The match itself was fiercely contested, but certain moments reportedly crossed the line of acceptable conduct, prompting immediate review by the IPL governing body.
While the BCCI has not disclosed full details of the infractions, sources indicate that the penalties are related to verbal exchanges and gestures that violated the spirit of the game. Hardik Pandya, who captained MI in the high-pressure game against his former franchise, was reportedly involved in aggressive on-field conduct that went beyond permissible limits.
On the other hand, Ashish Nehra, the head coach of GT, was allegedly involved in a post-match incident with the match officials regarding a controversial umpiring decision. Though no physical altercation took place, Nehra's reaction and comments were deemed inappropriate under IPL’s code.
Both Pandya and Nehra have accepted the fines and have opted not to contest the charges. In its communication, the BCCI emphasized that the IPL is governed by strict guidelines and expects all players and officials to maintain decorum, regardless of the intensity of the match.
The financial penalty, while not officially disclosed, is understood to be a significant amount—reportedly 25 percent of Pandya’s match fee and a fine of ₹12 lakh on Nehra. These actions serve as a strong reminder that even high-profile figures are not above the code.
This incident comes at a time when the BCCI is making renewed efforts to reinforce discipline in the IPL, aiming to set an example for younger players and global audiences. The league, being one of the most watched cricket tournaments worldwide, has a responsibility to maintain high standards of conduct on and off the field.
Reactions from cricket fans have been mixed. While some supported the BCCI’s move, others expressed concern that high-tension games often lead to heated moments. However, most agree that maintaining discipline is essential for the league’s integrity.
Both franchises have chosen not to issue separate statements and are instead focused on upcoming fixtures. It is expected that internal discussions will take place within the teams to ensure no further violations occur.
The BCCI’s prompt action reinforces its commitment to a fair and respectful sporting environment and signals that all players, regardless of stature, are accountable under the league’s regulations.
