We want our players and the entire cricketing community to remember those we lost and to express our collective sorrow through these gestures.” According to the new directive, black armbands will be worn by all players during the upcoming matches.

In a powerful tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a solemn directive for all upcoming domestic and international cricket matches. As a mark of respect, players will wear black armbands during games, and the usual celebratory elements like cheerleaders and fireworks will be suspended.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of several security personnel and left many injured, sent shockwaves across the nation. The BCCI’s symbolic decision has been widely appreciated by fans and players alike, underlining the role of sport in uniting the country during moments of grief.

A senior BCCI official stated, “Cricket is more than just a game in India—it’s an emotion that connects people. At this moment of national mourning, we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims. We want our players and the entire cricketing community to remember those we lost and to express our collective sorrow through these gestures.”

According to the new directive, black armbands will be worn by all players during the upcoming matches. In addition, there will be a minute of silence observed before the start of each game this week. Stadiums have been asked to tone down celebratory visuals, and there will be no musical performances, cheer squads, or post-match firework displays.

Team India captain Rohit Sharma also shared his condolences on social media, writing, “We mourn with the nation. My prayers are with the families who have suffered this unimaginable loss. Our armbands will represent the sorrow of a billion hearts.”

Cricket fans across the country have supported the move, praising BCCI for acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Many took to social media to express pride in the Indian cricket team’s gesture and the broader sports community’s response.

Several franchises from the Indian Premier League (IPL) have also echoed the BCCI’s stance, announcing plans to pay homage to the victims during their upcoming matches. Messages of tribute will be displayed across LED boards in stadiums, and players will refrain from celebratory gestures during wickets and milestones.

The BCCI’s initiative is a reminder that sports can play a vital role in healing and unity. While the nation grieves, such gestures offer a moment of reflection, respect, and shared resilience in the face of tragedy.
