Cricket administrators note that while rain has long been a factor in match planning, fog presents a different challenge, particularly for night games.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to review and possibly tighten its operational protocols following the abandonment of the fourth T20 International between India and South Africa in Lucknow due to heavy fog. The match was called off without a ball being bowled as dense fog significantly reduced visibility, raising safety concerns for players, umpires, and spectators.

The decision to abandon the match was taken after multiple assessments by match officials confirmed that conditions were unlikely to improve within a reasonable timeframe. Such weather-related cancellations due to fog are rare in international cricket, making the incident a point of serious discussion within cricket administration circles.

BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla stated that the board would examine the circumstances that led to the washout and evaluate existing guidelines. According to him, the aim is to ensure that international fixtures are planned with greater consideration of seasonal weather patterns, especially during winter months when fog is common in parts of northern India.

The review is expected to focus on scheduling practices, venue selection, and contingency measures. Officials may consider avoiding night matches in regions prone to fog during certain periods or exploring alternative start times to minimise risk. The board could also strengthen coordination with meteorological departments to improve weather forecasting and decision-making.

The abandonment disappointed fans who had gathered at the stadium in large numbers and those watching from home. It also affected the momentum of the series, highlighting the broader impact of weather disruptions on international cricket calendars.

Cricket administrators note that while rain has long been a factor in match planning, fog presents a different challenge, particularly for night games. Reduced visibility not only affects players’ ability to see the ball but also raises concerns for broadcast operations and on-field safety.

The BCCI has previously taken steps to adapt scheduling in response to environmental factors, such as heat and air quality. The Lucknow incident may now prompt similar adjustments for fog-prone conditions. Any new measures are likely to be discussed with the International Cricket Council and other stakeholders to ensure alignment with global standards.

As India continues to host a packed international calendar, officials believe that proactive planning will be key to minimising disruptions. The outcome of the review could influence how future matches are scheduled during winter months, particularly in northern venues.

The board is expected to share further details once internal discussions are completed. For now, the focus remains on learning from the incident and implementing measures that balance player safety, fan experience, and the smooth conduct of international matches.
