Chad Bowes has etched his name in the annals of cricket history after smashing the fastest double century in List A cricket. Representing Canterbury in a match against Otago at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 23, Bowes reached the remarkable milestone of 200 runs in just 103 balls, captivating fans and cricket enthusiasts alike.

This extraordinary innings took place during Bowes' 100th List A appearance, making it a significant milestone for the 32-year-old South African-born cricketer. His performance was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing a breathtaking array of strokes that included 27 fours and 7 sixes. Bowes ended the match with an impressive total of 205 runs off 110 balls, leading Canterbury to a formidable score of 343 for nine after they were put in to bat first.

Bowes’ innings was crucial in setting up the match, as his explosive batting laid a solid foundation for Canterbury’s total. His remarkable knock came to an end during the 39th over when he was dismissed by Matthew Bacon, who claimed five wickets for Otago. Despite his departure, Bowes had already made a significant impact, and his stellar performance contributed to Canterbury’s massive victory by 240 runs, as they bowled Otago out for just 103 runs in 24.5 overs.

The significance of Bowes' achievement cannot be overstated. His record-breaking double century shattered the previous record for the fastest double century in List A cricket, which was jointly held by Australian cricketer Travis Head and Indian batsman Narayan Jagadeesan. Head set the original benchmark during the 2021-22 Marsh Cup while playing for South Australia, reaching his double century in 114 balls against Queensland, leading his team to victory by 67 runs via the DLS method. Jagadeesan matched this feat in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring a double century for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh in a match that Tamil Nadu won by an astonishing 435 runs.

In addition to the records held by Head and Jagadeesan, Bowes now stands as the fastest double centurion in List A cricket, showcasing his incredible skill and talent. Notably, Head also holds the next-fastest double century, which he achieved in another Marsh Cup match against Western Australia in 2015, scoring 200 runs off 117 balls.

The list of the quickest double centuries in List A cricket includes England's Ben Duckett and India's Sanju Samson. Duckett scored his double century in 123 balls for the England Lions against Sri Lanka A in 2016, contributing to a 140-run victory. Meanwhile, Samson reached his milestone in 125 balls while playing for Kerala against Goa in the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with Kerala winning the match by 104 runs.

Chad Bowes’ phenomenal performance has undoubtedly made waves in the cricketing world, marking him as one of the brightest talents in the game today. His ability to dominate the bowling attack and maintain a high strike rate showcases not only his skill but also his potential to make significant contributions to New Zealand cricket in the future. As fans celebrate this remarkable achievement, Bowes' name will be remembered as one of the greats in List A cricket history.

Jagadeesan matched this feat in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring a double century for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh in a match that Tamil Nadu won by an astonishing 435 runs.
