As the IPL 2025 auction draws near, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by the legendary MS Dhoni, are reportedly turning their attention to a young and promising talent from Mumbai, Ayush Mhatre. The 17-year-old batter has been invited to CSK’s trials after making an impression with his strong performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy, where he has consistently showcased his potential.

Mhatre, who is relatively new to the first-class circuit, has already demonstrated his skill in just five matches, amassing 321 runs at an average of 35.66. One of his standout performances was a memorable knock of 176 runs against Maharashtra at the BKC ground, a performance that caught the eye of none other than MS Dhoni. Known for his calm demeanor and ability to excel in high-pressure situations, Mhatre represents the type of young, technically proficient player that CSK is renowned for nurturing.

According to a report from the Times of India (TOI), CSK’s CEO, Kasi Viswanath, has formally requested the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to allow Mhatre to attend trials for the IPL 2025 season. These trials will take place in Jeddah, where the auction will be held, and the timing works out well, with a six-day gap between the end of the Ranji Trophy and the start of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This window allows Mhatre to attend the trials without conflicting with his domestic commitments.

Mhatre’s rise is not just a testament to his batting abilities but also his growing reputation in the domestic circuit, with the possibility of him being included in Mumbai's Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 squad further underscoring his potential. His ability to perform in both longer formats and shorter formats of the game makes him an exciting prospect for any IPL franchise, and CSK, with their track record of developing raw talent, might have found a gem in Mhatre.

CSK’s history of identifying and nurturing young talent is well-established. Over the years, players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Matheesha Pathirana, and more recently, Sameer Rizvi, have emerged through their ranks, making significant contributions to the team. Mhatre could very well be the next name to add to that list, joining the ranks of some of CSK’s most celebrated players.

As IPL 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on Ayush Mhatre and his performance in the trials, as he looks to potentially secure a spot with one of the most successful franchises in the league's history.
