Harry Brook has been appointed as the stand-in captain for England's five-match ODI series against Australia, starting on September 19, as regular captain and wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler remains sidelined due to a right calf injury.

Buttler, who was also absent from the recent T20I series against Australia, which concluded with a 1-1 draw after the final match was abandoned due to rain in Manchester, will not be available for the upcoming ODIs. During the T20Is, Phil Salt took on the captaincy role in Buttler's absence.

Brook, set to lead the team in the 50-over format, will take on his first leadership role with the national team across any format. The 25-year-old has previously captained Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. His new role marks a significant step in his international career.

In addition to Buttler’s absence, England will also have to contend with another lineup change as Josh Hull is sidelined with a quad injury. Hull, who made his debut for England in the third Test against Sri Lanka, had impressed with three wickets in his first innings. His injury adds to the team’s challenges as they prepare for the ODI series against a strong Australian side.
