In a thrilling encounter at the Seat Unique Riverside in Chester-le-Street on September 24, Harry Brook delivered an impressive performance, scoring his maiden one-day international century to guide England to a crucial 46-run victory over Australia in the rain-affected 3rd ODI. This win keeps England’s hopes alive in the five-match series, having lost the first two games.

Set a target of 305 runs to chase, England faced early setbacks when stand-in captain Brook came to the crease after the dismissals of openers Phil Salt, who fell for a duck after just 8 balls, and Ben Duckett, who managed only 8 runs off 9 balls. At this point, England was in a precarious position, but Brook quickly steadied the ship. He showcased remarkable composure and skill, finishing unbeaten on 110 runs off 94 balls, while leading the team towards their target.

Brook formed a formidable partnership with Will Jacks, who played a pivotal role in the innings with a solid contribution of 84 runs off 82 balls. Together, they constructed a remarkable 156-run stand, significantly lifting England's spirits after the early wickets. Despite losing Jacks and Jamie Smith, who scored 7 runs off 16 balls, Brook continued to anchor the innings, and was joined by Liam Livingstone, who contributed a quickfire 33 runs off just 20 balls. Their efforts ensured that England reached a total of 254 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 37.4 overs before heavy rain interrupted the match, leading to a no-result as further play was impossible.

Fortunately for England, their score was well ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) target, securing them the win. Brook's performance not only marked a personal milestone but also demonstrated his leadership qualities in the absence of regular captain Jos Buttler.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc made early inroads with the ball, claiming two wickets for 63 runs in his 8 overs. All-rounder Cameron Green also contributed to Australia’s bowling efforts, picking up two wickets for 45 runs in 6 overs. Despite their best efforts, Australia's bowling attack struggled to contain Brook and Jacks during their crucial partnership.

This victory provides a much-needed boost for England as they aim to level the series in the upcoming matches. Brook's century, characterized by a blend of aggressive strokes and calculated shots, reflects his growing stature in the ODI format and bodes well for the future of English cricket. As the series continues, all eyes will be on how both teams adjust and respond in the next matches.
