Shikhar Dhawan, the former India opener, is set to make his debut in the inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) after signing with Karnali Yaks on November 14, 2024. This announcement comes shortly after Dhawan's retirement from international and domestic cricket, marking a new chapter in his career. Dhawan's move to the NPL is a significant development, as it signals the beginning of his involvement in T20 leagues beyond his long-standing association with the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhawan, who recently stepped down from his role as the captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL after the 2024 season, had a career year marred by injuries. During IPL 2024, he captained PBKS for five matches, scoring 152 runs at a strike rate of 125.62. His leadership, however, came to an end after the 2024 season, and he was released ahead of the 2025 IPL mega-auction.
Karnali Yaks, the NPL franchise, made the announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter), introducing Dhawan with enthusiasm, stating, "Karnali Yaks is bringing the fierce energy of 'Gabbar' himself, Shikhar Dhawan, to the Nepal Premier League! With his dynamic style and experience, he's ready to shake things up. Brace yourselves because Gabbar has arrived!" Dhawan’s nickname, "Gabbar," reflects his aggressive playing style, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
Earlier in August 2024, Dhawan made his retirement official through an emotional Instagram post, bringing the curtains down on a remarkable international career that spanned over a decade. Known for his consistency and flair in One Day Internationals (ODIs), Dhawan amassed 6,793 runs in 167 ODI matches, including 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries. His partnership with Rohit Sharma as the opening duo for India was one of the most successful and iconic pairings in modern-day cricket.
Following his retirement, Dhawan continued his cricketing journey by participating in the Legends League Cricket 2024, further solidifying his commitment to the game in a different format. His decision to join the Nepal Premier League represents a fresh opportunity for the seasoned cricketer to showcase his skills in an emerging cricketing landscape while bringing his wealth of experience to a growing competition.
With his move to the NPL, Dhawan's presence is expected to bring significant attention to the league, elevating its profile and inspiring a new generation of cricketers in Nepal. His leadership qualities and vast experience in international cricket will undoubtedly be valuable assets to Karnali Yaks as they embark on this exciting journey in the NPL.
